ALERA Ravino Big & Tall Series High Back Swivel/Tilt Leather Chair, 450lb Cap., Black Review

My wife bought this for my birthday.This review is written sitting in the chair after assembling it.

I love Amazon.I love the business model.But I'm afraid furniture is not something to buy over the internet.

I'll start with some assembly suggestions.The product includes extra fasteners, a big plus in my experience.The packaging for the small commponents was well organized, and the instructions were clear.The product is made in China.

The biggest problem is the tool included for assembly.It is only a 5 millimeter Allen wrench.It was frustrating to work with just that, so I broke out my own tools and things went more smoothly.If you plan on assembling this chair yourself, I would recommend a selection of tools similar to the following:

- A 3/8" drive ratchet, such as the SK 45170 (my favorite!) - S K Hand Tools (SKT45170) 3/8in. Drive Reversible Ratchet 7.6in..Alternatively, a slightly less expensive speed handle like the Proto 5280 will do - Proto 17" 5280 3/8drive Ratchet Speed Handle.I used both.

- A 12mm socket, like the 3/8" Drive Extra Deep 6 Point Socket 12 mm (SKT8462) Category: Sockets.It doesn't have to be deep, but I would recommend a six-point socket rather than a twelve-point.

- A 5mm hex bit socket - the Lisle (LIS33880) 3/8 Drive Hex Bit Socket 5mm is a reasonable choice.

Note that any brand will work, and things like sockets or hex bits are usually much cheaper when bought as a set.

One additional suggestion:The instructions have one bolt the chair to the base, then the back to the chair, and finally the arms.The arms were very difficult to align...they feel like cast aluminum, and dont flex.What worked for me was to loosen up the seat back bolts so that the back and seat could align with the holed in the arms.

All bolts have a thread fastener compound applied (e.g. like Loc-Tite), which is a good safety factor in my opinion.At the same time, this makes use of the included Allen wrench to assemble the chair somewhat problematic.

Build quality is adequate.The base is metal, not plastic, which is a plus.Welds are messy but hidden.

I am unable to adjust the tilt of the chair.This may just need more fiddling with the controls.

But the biggest drawback of the chair, now that it's assembled, is the height.This is not a high-back chair.The width is good, and any full-figure individuals might find this chair perfectly adequate.The height does not come to my neck, and is just about even with the tops of my shoulders.I have a long torso, so others might have different responses.

However, the combination of the inability to adjust the chair tilt and the bulbous pillow at the top has already given me an upper back pain.Not really very ergonomic, and the pillow cannot be flipped back.

So...despite some good points...my experience is that I would not recommend this for anyone looking for a tall chair.
